Is computer information systems a good degree?

The evolution of computers and technology has evolved exponentially, and it’s brought with it a plethora of amazing job opportunities. When most people think of jobs in tech, they think of software developers with computer science degrees. But there are plenty of other opportunities out there in the technology that don’t require as much mathematics. Getting a degree in computer information systems (CIS) is one of those opportunities.

If you’re looking at a career in tech, you may have stumbled upon the option of getting a CIS degree. But what exactly is CIS? Information systems focus on the area between the user and the computer. It’s about understanding, organizing, and managing this data. Someone taking a course for CIS will be learning about databases and database design, information architecture, and systems analysis. Naturally, it will have some overlap with a CS degree, but it’s going to be more focused on systems and data and how people interact with them than on math equations and theories.

What CIS is Like

A CIS degree is great for someone that wants to work with the logic of computers but prefers to have some human interaction thrown into the mix. Information systems are about using computers as tools, and a lot of this career will be about helping users with their technology goals. If helping people and supporting their needs is something you enjoy, CIS may be something you want to consider.

As a vocation, CIS can be challenging. While you aren’t learning a whole lot of development, you will need to be on your toes in the ever-changing climate of technology. In fact, a big part of your job will be to analyze and understand technology trends and communicating those things to users. The nature of CIS also means that no two days will be the same. So, while it is challenging, if you’re someone that enjoys learning and appreciates variety, a degree in CIS can be very rewarding.

CIS Salaries

Computer information systems can be a very lucrative career option. And while the high salaries draw many people, the explosive growth of technology has ensured that there are still many of these positions to fill.

For someone that’s earned an associate degree in CIS, they can expect to make an average of $59,000 per year. For someone that’s earned bachelor’s degree, that number moves up to $73,000. Relative to other careers requiring similar degrees, CIS is very attractive.

Career Options and Growth

A CIS degree will open a lot of doors for you. You could potentially work as a systems analyst, security specialist, network technician, or systems administrator. Some CIS graduates choose paths in database design or administration. And still, others choose to climb the ladder starting as high-tier technical support.

Given technology’s exponential growth, CIS jobs aren’t going anywhere. There are still more jobs to fill than there are qualified candidates to fill them. And once you start your career, there are clear trajectories for where you can go, with management and even executive-level positions being a possibility.

With that said, is getting a degree in CIS a good choice? As with any career choice, that depends on the person, but from a practical standpoint, CIS is a fantastic option. If you’re a people person with a knack for computers, enjoy continuous learning, and want to have a stable career with high earning potential, CIS just might be your dream job.
